A tormented trio of sonic scientists (King Most, FA, and Marky) search for a form of underground life that according to theory still exists…humans with soul. Scarce in population, these lifeforms are a result of retaining high standards for musical appreciation at even higher temperatures over thousands of years.

Once these souls are located, they are transported and kept in a spherical electrocution chamber…the TERRORDOME. Mind blowing scenes of merciless mental torture that paralyze the heart ensue. The only way these lifeforms survive is through extreme body movement in a rhythmic pattern. Once the frequencies freeze bloodflow due to inactivity and lack of participation, the scientists of sound take the numb bodies as specimens for their own diabolical disposal.

WELCOME TO THE TERRORDOME.

SWEATER FUNK: MIDWAY CD RELEASE PARTY
@ Li Po Lounge, 916 Grant Avenue, Chinatown, SF
21+ | 9pm-130am | FREE

A special edition of SWEATER FUNK goes down this Sunday, October 16 2011 at Li Po Lounge, SF for the official release of MIDWAY, a new mix by PROOF (aka Marky) dedicated to mellow steppers and midtempo soul inspired by Chicago. Limited edition handmade CD’s will be available… Be the first on your block to step to MIDWAY and sink your ears into that deep, beautiful, modern soul sound… Boogie down, Chinatown!

ABOUT MIDWAY
MIDWAY. The latest mix by PROOF (aka MARKY) that dips into the stepper sound — modern soul, R&B, and smooth grooves. It’s a collection of mellow steppers and mid-tempo soul inspired by Chicago. Step to classics by Jeffree, Starvue, Mtume, Archie Bell & The Drells, and Breakwater… Then glide to modern cuts by The Sunburst Band, Xscape, Martine Girault, and Erykah Badu. Selections include records picked up in Chicago along with favorites played at SWEATER FUNK, San Francisco’s infamous all-vinyl boogie and modern soul party. MIDWAY was compiled and mixed together with love, letting each song to play out a little longer so you can get into the groove. More info: http://proof.massiveselector.com/?p=869

MIDWAY
mellow steppers + mid-tempo soul
MIXED by PROOF

Chicago’s got so much soul. From the warm-hearted people, the comfort food, to it’s rich musical history rooted in gospel, blues, and jazz… Soul runs deep in the Windy C. Just turn on the radio when you’re there, and you’re guaranteed to hear Marvin, Luther, or Anita at any given moment. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Chicago on the regular, and no trip would be complete without a stop at my favorite shop in the South Side, Mr. Peabody Records. I’d spend hours searching for rare boogie and obscure disco tracks on wax, which Mr. Peabody’s was known for. Mark Grusane, one of the owners, would play records for me while I shopped, and after awhile, he started picking up on what I was digging. On a recent trip, Mark was playing a smooth, buttery track, with infectious vocals that just hit me. I asked “Yo, what’s this?” He said, “Oh, you want steppers?” Steppers, or 2-Step soul, are mellow, mid-tempo groovers perfect for steppin’, a mid-70′s dance phenomenon that blew up in Chicago… Mark was playing “My Love Don’t Come Easy” by Jean Carn, a classic stepper, and I’ve been on that tip ever since.

MIDWAY is my latest mix that dips into the stepper sound — modern soul, R&B, and smooth grooves. Selections include records I picked up at Mr. Peabody Records along with favorites played at SWEATER FUNK, San Francisco’s infamous all-vinyl boogie and modern soul party. MIDWAY was compiled and mixed together with love, letting each song to play out a little longer so you can get into the groove.

MIDWAY drops on October 16, 2011 at SWEATER FUNK, 916 Grant Avenue in Chinatown, San Francisco.

A simple edit I made of one of my favorite Jean Carn tracks, “My Love Don’t Come Easy”. Removed the epic sax intro and opted for a more minimal, DJ friendly one instead. Enjoy!

ABOUT STEVE ARRINGTON
Known for his innovative vocals on such classics as “Watching You” and “Just A Touch of Love,” with Slave, as well as his solo work like “Weak at the Knees”, “Way Out” and “Nobody Can Be You”, Steve Arrington is one of those “what ever happened to” stories from the soul/funk movement of the 1980s. His songs have been sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Snoop, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey, and N.W.A. His music also helped create the blueprint of 90’s west coast g-funk music along with Zapp and George Clinton.

My dad always told me, “DON’T PROSS-CRAS-TI-NATE!” and what do I do? Procrastinate. Unfortunately for me, the Chicago Marathon is exactly 3 months away and I’ve barely even started training. Now if this was a 10k, no sweat. A half marathon? I think I could probably tough it out. But this is 26.2 miles we’re talking here. That’s like me running from San Francisco to Redwood City without getting hurt! It ain’t gonna happen.

To motivate, I decided to run for a good cause and a great person. As some of you may know, my dad suffered a heart attack last year and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. My dad is doing just fine now, but the experience helped me realize a couple things: 1) the Filipino diet really IS bad for you! 2) heart disease and stroke are No. 1 and No. 3 killers in the United States. While researching charities, it was a no-brainer to train and raise funds for the American Heart Association “Run With Heart” Team to help build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. I have committed to raise $1500 towards the cause, and I need your help to achieve my fundraising goal. Whether $5, $25, or $250 any contribution is greatly appreciated.

This run’s for you, Dad!
